Said this, in order to understand a little bit about these colleges, we want to give a bit of history to each one of them:

1. Public Colleges

Public Colleges in Canada are also known as (A.K.A.) Community Colleges were created in the '70s. Their purpose is to educate and train people to be ready to engage in an employment activity once graduated from the program. They are controlled by the provinces, such as Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia, etc. and they work in a way that benefits you from a strong perspective.

These colleges offer you two levels of education: Post-secondary, and Post-graduate. The post-secondary programs are divided into 1 years certificate, 2 years diplomas, 3 years advanced diplomas, 4 years bachelor's degrees. However, your certification would be lower than university. If you are looking for a higher education program post-graduate programs are your option. These programs are offered for 1-years post-graduate, and 2-years post-graduate.

These colleges allow you to work 20 hours per week while you study, and full time while you are on vacation periods. Once you graduate from these programs you can apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). The immigration rule is:

  • Study 1 year and get 1-year PGWP

  • Study 2 years and get up to 3 years PGWP

  • Study 3 years and get up to 3 years PGWP

  • Study 4 years and get up to 3 years PGWP

This rule applies to EVERY Public college in Canada, however, you are allowed to apply to this PGWP only ONCE in your life, so we advise you to apply for a 2 years program so you can enjoy the 3 years of PGWP.

Another benefit of the public colleges is that if you have a husband or wife or a common-law relationship, your partner can apply for an Open Work Permit while the duration of your studies.

Also, this is the best, your kids are allowed to register at a public school (from grade 1 to grade 12) completely FREE!

2. Private Colleges

Private colleges in Canada were created due to the lack of international students being able to engage employment in Canada. In 2013, the Government of Canada erase the option for international students enrolled in an ESL or FSL program (English or French) and due to the lack of these, Languages schools started creating what is called Private Career Colleges (PCC) or private colleges.

Said this, a private college in Canada Is an institution that will give an academic program together with an employment experience in Canada. The English level required for these is programs is lower, however, the benefits from these colleges are much shorter.

You are not allowed to apply for the PGWP, nor your partner gets a work permit, nor your kids can not attend public education in Canada. However, the price for these colleges is much lower and gives you a fast and quick diploma that can help you improve your career opportunities in your home country.

Do you want to know the admission requirements for these colleges? We want to help you and for that, we encourage you to get in touch with us, so we can explain and show you what We Study Canada is about.

Colleges in Canada are the best option for you if you are trying to emigrate to Canada, and obtain a permanent residency. Think that if you have someone from another country coming to yours without the language, certifications, experience, or connections, it will be very hard for them to demonstrate what they are and what they are capable of doing. This is why we recommend you start with your studies. While you learn new vocabulary, and Canadian context, you are networking, connecting with people from the industry and investing in your future to stay and remain in Canada.
